Begonia Chivalry

Begonia 'Chivalry' is a striking rhizomatous begonia loved for its dramatic, velvety foliage and bold contrast. Its deeply lobed leaves range from dark green to nearly black, accented by neon green veining that creates a stunning pattern across the leaf surface. In certain lighting conditions, the foliage can display a subtle blue iridescence, adding even more depth and character to this exceptional cultivar.  Mature plants may produce clusters of soft pink flowers, but ‘Chivalry' is grown primarily for its remarkable foliage rather than its blooms.

In my collection, my mother plant prefers higher humidity and lower light conditions than many other begonias I grow. It is kept in a plant cabinet approximately two feet from a T5 grow light, where humidity typically ranges between 70-95%. Under these conditions, the foliage develops excellent color, maintaining its dark velvety appearance while avoiding stress from excessive light.

One thing I have learned is that Begonia 'Chivalry' is particularly sensitive to overwatering. As a rhizomatous begonia, it benefits from allowing the potting mix to dry noticeably between waterings. In my experience, it performs best when given periods of dryness rather than being kept consistently moist. This approach helps maintain healthy roots and encourages steady growth while reducing the risk of rot. I have also noticed that in my growing conditions, it hs been a slower grower than some of my other rhizomatous types.
