Begonia Dejah Thorris

Begonia 'Dejah Thoris' is a striking rhizomatous begonia known for its brilliant metallic foliage and ever-changing coloration. New leaves often emerge in shades of rosy, metallic pink before maturing into shimmering silver tones accented by deep purple markings. The dramatic contrast between the bright leaf centers and darker margins gives this cultivar a bold, almost magical appearance.

The foliage is the star of the show, displaying a beautiful mix of silver, pink, plum, and burgundy tones that can vary depending on growing conditions. Under bright, indirect light, the leaves develop their strongest metallic sheen and most vibrant coloration. Its compact, mounded growth habit makes it an excellent choice for shelves, plant cabinets, and indoor displays where the foliage can be appreciated up close.

Mature plants may occasionally produce clusters of small white flowers in spring, although this cultivar is primarily grown for its ornamental foliage rather than its blooms. The leaves provide year-round interest and remain the defining feature of the plant.

In my growing conditions, my mother plant thrives in a greenhouse cabinet where it receives bright filtered light throughout the day. It is about 1 foot from a t5 grow light. It performs well in greenhouse cabinet around 60-70% humidity and develops its best coloration under brighter conditions. I grow it in a loose, well-draining substrate and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
