Begonia Red Planet

Begonia ‘Red Planet’ is a miniature rhizomatous begonia valued for its compact growth habit and uniquely patterned foliage. Originally introduced by MacIntyre in England, this hybrid features small oval leaves decorated with deep burgundy, and chocolate-brown mottling, along with a striking red dot at the point where the petiole meets the leaf.

The foliage is waxy in texture, displaying an intricate blend of dark tones that shift in intensity depending on growing conditions. Some specimens may develop deeper burgundy hues, while others showcase brighter chartreuse-green highlights against the darker background. Growing only about 4 to 6 inches tall, Begonia ‘Red Planet’ is perfectly suited for windowsills, terrariums, and greenhouse cabinets. Its naturally mounding habit allows it to remain compact while gradually producing a dense cluster of attractive foliage. Under favorable conditions, it may also produce delicate pink flowers that rise just above the leaves

In my experience, Begonia ‘Red Planet’ performs best in bright, indirect light and a loose, well-draining substrate that promotes healthy root growth. I allow the growing medium to dry between waterings, as this variety is not sensitive to drying out. My mother plant lives on a south facing windows sill above the kitchen sink in ambient kitchen humidity.  Its compact growth and manageable care requirements make it an excellent choice for both collectors and growers with limited space.
