Begonia Miss Louisianna

Begonia ‘Miss Louisiana’ is a distinctive rex begonia hybrid created by Freda Holley and prized for its elegant foliage and compact growth habit. Its leaves display a beautiful blend of silver and olive-green patterning, highlighted by a unique red dot at the point where the petiole attaches to the leaf.

The foliage is richly textured and changes throughout the year, with colors becoming softer during the heat of summer and intensifying again as temperatures cool. The silvery overlay contrasts beautifully against the darker green tones, creating depth and dimension that draws attention from every angle. Its compact form makes it an excellent choice for growers who appreciate dramatic foliage without sacrificing valuable growing space.

With a mature size of approximately 10 to 12 inches tall, Begonia ‘Miss Louisiana’ is well suited for cabinets, and indoor plant displays. Its tidy growth habit and manageable size make it easy to incorporate into both small and large collections while providing year-round interest through its colorful foliage.

In my experience, Begonia ‘Miss Louisiana’ performs best in bright, indirect light and an airy, well-draining substrate that promotes healthy root growth and adequate airflow. I allow the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings, as this cultivar is sensitive to excess moisture and benefits from a balance of consistent hydration and good root-zone aeration. While moderate humidity supports optimal foliage quality, I have found this variety to be fairly adaptable when provided with steady watering practices and good air circulation. Compared to some other rex begonias in my collection, it has exhibited a somewhat slower growth rate, though its striking foliage more than compensates for its measured pace. My mother plant is grown in ambient household conditions approximately three feet from a south-facing window, where it receives bright filtered natural light throughout the day. It also benefits from supplemental illumination from a nearby T5 grow light, a combination that has produced healthy growth and excellent leaf coloration.
