Begonia Phillip Iloo

Begonia 'Phillip Iloo' is a compact rhizomatous begonia prized for its attractive foliage, manageable size, and easy-care growth habit. While not as commonly seen as some rex begonias, it has become appreciated by collectors for its ability to form a dense, attractive specimen without taking up excessive space. Mature plants typically remain compact, making them ideal for shelves, plant cabinets, and indoor growing spaces.

As a rhizomatous begonia, 'Phillip Iloo' grows from creeping rhizomes that gradually spread across the surface of the pot, producing multiple growth points and creating a full, mounded appearance over time. Its compact growth habit and attractive foliage make it an excellent choice for both beginning and experienced begonia growers

In my collection, Begonia 'Phillip Iloo' performs best in bright, indirect light and is positioned a few feet from a T5 grow light. My mother plant is grown in a greenhouse cabinet where humidity consistently remains above 70%, and it has responded exceptionally well to these conditions. While the cultivar can adapt to average indoor humidity, I have found that higher humidity promotes healthier foliage and more vigorous growth.

One characteristic that stands out with my plant is its preference for a drier watering cycle. Unlike some begonias that prefer more consistent moisture, my 'Phillip Iloo' performs best when allowed to dry out completely between waterings. As a rhizomatous begonia, it stores moisture within its rhizomes and has proven to be quite tolerant of short dry periods. A loose, well-draining substrate combined with infrequent watering has resulted in the healthiest growth and strongest root system in my collection.
